On May 20th, we visited IGUS Korea.
1. Company Overview
IGUS is a German manufacturing company founded in 1964, specializing in motion plastics high performance polymer components that move instead of traditional metal parts. Its main products include energy chains (cable carriers), bearings, and flexible cables, which are widely used in automation, robotics, and industrial machinery. IGUS focuses on replacing metal with lightweight, lubrication free plastic solutions to reduce cost, maintenance, and energy consumption.
The company operates globally with subsidiaries in many countries, including Korea. IGUS Korea provides technical support, product customization, and fast delivery services tailored to local industries.
2. Activities and Experience
One of the most memorable parts of the visit was a team activity where we built a tower using spaghetti and marshmallow. Although it seemed simple, the task required creativity, communication, and teamwork. It showed how collaboration and problem-solving are essential skills in real working environments.
We also attended a presentation by an employee who graduated from Incheon National University. Hearing directly from someone with a similar background made the experience more relatable. The speaker shared insights about working in a global company, emphasizing adaptability, communication skills, and continuous learning.
3. Differences Between Foreign and Korean Companies
During the session, we learned about differences between foreign companies like IGUS and typical Korean companies. IGUS, as a German firm, tends to have a more horizontal and flexible organizational culture, where communication is open and less hierarchical. In contrast, Korean companies are often more structured and hierarchical.
Another difference is the focus on work-life balance and individual responsibility. Foreign companies generally encourage autonomy and efficiency, while Korean companies may emphasize group harmony and longer working hours.
4. Reflections
This visit helped us understand how global companies operate and what kind of mindset is needed to work in such environments. IGUS's focus on innovation through materials and its practical approach to engineering showed how even small components can create large value in industry.
The combination of hands-on activity, employee presentation, and cultural insights made the visit both engaging and meaningful. It also made us think more seriously about what skills we need to develop for our future careers.
